There’s no denying that Virginia has some top-notch outdoor activities. The commonwealth boasts great natural beauty from the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge regions of the great Appalachia to the watery reaches of the lower Chesapeake or Atlantic. That bounty of outdoor activities inspires Virginians to dig into their favorite search engines.
June is the “Great Outdoors Month.” BetVirginia.com, where Virginia sports betting is the main focus, wanted to see which states were most excited to go explore the outdoors as we head into the summer. Here are the top 10 states, with our methodology explained below:
Rank | State | Search Interest Score |
1 | Minnesota | 100 |
2 | Oregon | 80 |
3 | Indiana | 70 |
4 | Missouri | 60 |
5 | Wisconsin | 50 |
6 | Colorado | 49 |
7 | Washington | 47 |
8 | New Jersey | 40 |
9 | Virginia | 38 |
10 | Arizona | 32 |
Using Google Trends, we found and ranked states most interested in “outdoors activities,” according to search interest score. Search interest score was compared to other topics, with statistics compiled from May 16-23, 2024.
The Old Dominion, home of operators offering the best Virginia sportsbook promo codes, ranks ninth nationally on our list of statewide search interest scores for all things having to do with being outside.
Virginia’s search interest score of 38 (again compared to other topics) makes its way into our top 10, just ahead of No. 10 Arizona (32 search interest score) and behind No. 8 New Jersey at 40.
Nationally, the leaders in outdoor search interest were Minnesota (100 search interest), Oregon (80), Indiana (70), Missouri (60) and Wisconsin (50). Then comes Colorado at No. 6 with a search interest score of 49 and Washington (47) at No. 7.
Virginia residents can choose from Shenandoah National Park, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the highlands of the west or the sandy reaches of the Tidewater and Eastern Shore. One thing that seems certain is that residents of the Old Dominion are far from shy about getting outside as summer arrives.
