How High Will Virginia Sportsbooks Numbers Climb?

Overall, the Virginia sports betting marketplace should see sizeable improvements year-over-year this football season across the board, as they have every year since they launched in 2021.

The biggest net increase among the three categories surveyed for this story (projected handle, revenue and taxes generated) was handle, which grew by 19.75% between 2022 and 2024, from $1,961,197,398 in 2022 to $2,363,671,819 in 2023 and $2,813,509,906 a year ago.

NFL betting in Virginia is a leading driver for wagering interest and college football isn’t far behind, driving these annual spikes in the final months of every year.

The aggregate increases in handle over the years means that we can expect the Virginia sports betting scene to see roughly $3.4 billion in wagers during the year-ending period, averaging out to just under $842.3 million per month from September to December.

As for revenue from Virginia sportsbook apps, the story’s much the same in the Old Dominion. Those figures surged up 11.7% during the period in question, going from $193,771,637 in 2022 to $195,523,200 in 2023 and $239,401,936 a year ago.

Using that 11.7% average increase, we can project that Virginia’s football season sports betting revenue will finish up at just under $267.3 million in 2025.

Revenue and taxes are harder to predict than handle (they rise and fall depending on how successful bettors are at placing winning wagers) but we can guess based on recent history.

Finally, the Commonwealth’s wagering tax bill during the 2025 football season is projected to finish up at just over $40.1 million, thanks to the 11.7% average increase in taxes collected between 2022 and 2024, from $193,771,637 to $239,401,936 a year ago.

The Washington Commanders are expected to contend for an NFC East crown in 2025, holding -160 playoff odds on DraftKings Sportsbook Virginia. The operator has +205 on Washington to win the NFC East and a +1800 line on capturing the Super Bowl.

It seems like Virginia’s sports betting market is bound to see a historic fall, beginning with the dawn of the college and NFL season in September.
